I ended up backing the game on Kickstarter simply because of the game's reputation-I'd never played it before, and to date the only visual novels I've really been able to get into outside of Nintendo handhelds have been Clannad and Steins Gate. No.Īs someone who has never read it before and is reading it now, I'll say I like it but don't understand people hyping it as one of the best, though it is pretty good imo. and some of those problems are things like misogyny or transphobia. There are plenty of legitimate problems in our media. I think criticism in general is a very important and necessary thing-but that's *valid* criticism. It's not so much that I care about whether someone likes or dislikes the game.

Though the reviewer's comments on transphobia in unlimited makes me think he didn't do a particularly charitable reading of the game and the setting it's in. Not everyone is going to like a game sadly. Originally posted by Zetto:Don't worry too much about it. I've also played Umineko and think it's one of the best visual novels, but personally, I enjoyed Muv-Luv Alternative more as an experience, as the immersion it offers is truly unparalleled in anyr medium

It was directed towards the article in question and the so-called "reviewer". I apologize if you misinterpreted my comment. If Alternative does even half of what those two VNs do, I'll be happy enough. I think Umineko is one of the best VNs for its thematic content, character depth and ambitions with storytelling. I already know some spoilers from Alternative sadly, but that's never bothered me before. I don't know if that asinine comment was towards me or the reviewer, but I don't see how giving my opinion on what I've currently read is asinine. Originally posted by Zetto:I really liked Extra and Unlimited, so I'm naturally going to play Alternative, which is touted by fans to be the magnum opus of this series. Take any one of the three away and the entire experience is cheapened.Īs a result he is essentially trying to review something while missing half of the material. Alternative gives you the heart and soul of the experience. The trilogy is deliberate in how it is crafted with each part fulfilling a specific role. But once Alternative enters the equation it is a totally different ballgame. And just utilizing the scope of those two he isn't wrong. The reviewer for example mentions the potential of Extra and Unlimited but says it isn't realized in a rewarding way. The main thing about Alternative isn't that it is just the best part of the trilogy, which it is, but that it contextualizes and gives new depth and meaning to Extra and Unlimited, from a literary and meta standpoint. It must've been pretty shocking, but nevertheless, you should soldier forward with anticipation. I highly highly recomend playing Alternative once it comes out and you finish both Extra and Unlimited.Īlso, I'm sorry you had to see that spoiler. People hype the whole trilogy to be one of the best, not just Extra and Unlimited by themselves.

Muv-Luv by itself is fairly mediocre, but with the addition of Alternative, the series is elevated to unbelievable proportions. It seems to me that he was not the intended consumer at all, especially since Muv-Luv is NOT at all a visual novel for beginners to the medium. However, the matter is made worse because the author of the article appears to be a complete neophyte when it comes to visual novels or even common Japanese anime tropes.

People who rush to judge this series without experiencing it in full continue to boggle my mind with their asinine assumptions. The routes are actually different enough compared to Unlimited, and as a romcom it does what it does pretty damn well for how old it is, and with great presentation values to boot.īut yeah, there's always gonna be a review like that. If anything the one people seem to dislike the most, EXTRA, is the one I like the most from the two. That search engine doesn't know the concept of courteousness in regards to spoilers Though the reviewer's comments on transphobia in unlimited makes me think he didn't do a particularly charitable reading of the game and the setting it's in.Īs someone who has never read it before and is reading it now, I'll say I like it but don't understand people hyping it as one of the best, though it is pretty good imo.
